Antique Steele Micro-Beaded Flapper Handbag, cira 1920s or earlier
This Antique Steele Micro-Beaded Flapper Handbag, cira 1920s or earlier. This is a French Micro Beaded purse but there is no label inside. Many were a hand sewn label attached by one corner with thread. We are assuming it fell off over the years. Beaded purses hit their height in popularity during the Roaring Twenties. During this time period, styles varied greatly. Some were newer designs including Art Deco, floral, geometric, or abstract while others used older reticule or Art Nouveau patterns. The beaded bags had a greater variety of colors and shapes. Many also had the signature beaded fringe known for the Twenties. This lovely evening bag is covered on both sides with metallic steel micro-beads, entirely handsewn. The colors of the beads are dark blue, and light & dark gold. It comes with the two handles, also micro beaded in the same colors as the purse that serve as the drawstrings. It has an elaborate, beautifully designed 3” of beaded fringe at the bottom. The cut steel beads on the purse’s body and fringe catch the light and add a bit of sparkle. The fringe is 95% intact but there are a few strands that came unsewn but we have what we believe to be all the beads from those strands. In fact, it is indiscernible from looking that they are even detached/missing from the bag. The purse in Excellent Condition overall and could still be used today OR be displayed as the Glamorous work of art that it is. A Real Prize for a purse collector!
