Antique Asbestos Sad Iron, circa early 1900s,
Antique Asbestos Sad Iron, circa early 1900s, was manufactured by Dover Manufacturing which began operating in Dover, Ohio in 1900. It immediately began producing the Asbestos Sad Iron in a variety of different sizes, and yes, it actually used asbestos under the “hood” that was fitted over the heated core. It “bottled up” the heat and it was all channeled through the hot solid steel surface that pressed the clothes smooth. No heat rose upward to bother the woman ironing. After much delay, the company finally got a patent for a locking mechanism in 1903. These irons often referred to as Sad irons are also called flat irons or smoothing irons. They are shaped pieces of metal that are flat and polished on one side and have a handle attached to the other, created for the purpose of de-wrinkling fabric. “Sad” is an old English word for “solid,” Today, they are often used as decor: bookends, displayed in modern farmhouse decor, as well as in vintage shops and businesses. Of course, there are still many collectors who cherish these prized items that tell a story of past times.
